Why the region moves the number more than the title does

The single biggest lever on this calculator is the region dropdown, and it is worth being precise about why. Lower rates in India or Latin America reflect operating costs, not capability — Bangalore, Pune and Hyderabad hold some of the deepest Kubernetes and cloud talent pools anywhere. What you are actually buying with a higher-cost region is usually timezone overlap, contracting convenience, or a regulator who expects local accountability. Those are real things to pay for; they are just not the same thing as engineering quality, and conflating the two is how budgets get set badly in both directions.

The second lever is the engagement shape, and it is the one most buyers underweight. Hourly billing looks cheapest because the sticker rate is lowest, but it leaves the total open-ended and puts every hour of scope discovery on your side of the ledger. Fixed-scope costs more per hour precisely because the vendor is absorbing the risk that the estimate is wrong. A managed retainer trades a discount for committed volume and usually folds in on-call. What this calculator deliberately leaves out

Three costs sit outside the model because they depend on your situation rather than the market. The first is the vacancy cost of an in-house hire — the months a senior infrastructure role sits open while you recruit, during which the work either does not happen or lands on someone already busy. The second is your own team's time: discovery, access provisioning and answering "how does this currently work" is the most common reason a fixed-scope project runs long. The third is cloud spend itself, which frequently dwarfs the consulting line and is worth modelling separately with our cloud waste calculator or a cloud bill audit.

It also assumes the seniority you select is the seniority that shows up. That assumption is worth testing before you sign anything: ask for the blended seniority on billed hours directly, because a low rate resolving to junior engineers with a part-time reviewer routinely costs more per shipped outcome than a senior who finishes in a third of the time. How much does it cost to hire a DevOps engineer?

It depends far more on where the work is delivered than on the job title. Provider hourly bands in 2026 run about $25 to $60 in India, $50 to $110 in Latin America, $40 to $120 in Eastern Europe, $100 to $200 in the Gulf, $80 to $250 in the UK and $100 to $300 in the US. Hiring the same person in-house in the US costs roughly $175,000 to $235,000 a year fully loaded, once employer tax, benefits, equipment and recruiting are counted.

Why is the calculator showing a range instead of one number?

Because a single number would be false precision. Every published rate source reports bands, and the spread inside one country is large: UK contract data for the six months to August 2026 shows a tenth percentile of 385 pounds a day against a ninetieth of 700, nearly two-fold variation in one market. The range is the honest answer. Use the low end for well-scoped, well-documented work and the high end for regulated environments or anything carrying production on-call.

Is outsourcing DevOps actually cheaper than hiring in-house?

On headline cost, usually yes, and the calculator shows the gap. But the comparison is not like-for-like and treating it as one is how teams get burned. An engagement gives you a slice of a bench with no recruiting lead time and no vacancy risk, and you can stop it. A hire gives you undivided attention, accumulated context and someone whose incentives are yours. The genuine question is which risk you would rather carry, not which number is smaller. What is a fully loaded cost for an in-house DevOps hire?

Fully loaded means base salary plus everything the salary line hides: employer payroll tax, benefits and insurance, equipment and software, office or remote allowance, and recruiting cost amortised over expected tenure. A loading of roughly 1.3 to 1.4 times base is the common planning assumption, which is what this calculator applies. It deliberately excludes the cost of the role sitting vacant while you recruit, which for senior infrastructure roles is frequently months.
